Please kindly ignore the fact that I clearly know absolutely nothing about fishing. Well, I know part of it goes in the water! And a fish bites on it! Right?!

Prince of Tennis
Tezuka/Fuji
prompt: 'a river runs through it', which I didn't really use, but there's a river!

"I think the fish are nibbling my toes," Fuji said, smiling.

"They prefer your toes to my bait, apparently." Tezuka looked down at his companion, and Fuji could have sworn he saw the faintest smile.

"Am I ruining your fishing trip?" Fuji was laying next to Tezuka on a small dock that jutted out into the river, dangling his feet in the water. He'd managed not to fall asleep so far, but he was fairly certain that was only because the sky was clouded over. If he had the sun's warmth lulling him to sleep, Fuji was fairly certain he'd be unable to resist. Tezuka was so quiet, like he was hardly even there.

"No," Tezuka said seriously. "Of course you're not."

"So you're happy you brought me?" Fuji reached out to tug at Tezuka's sleeve, smiling up at him.

Tezuka frowned slightly. "I would be, but every time you move your feet you frighten away the fish."

"That means you'll only catch brave fish, fish that are worthy to be caught by Tezuka Kunimitsu." Fuji sat up, pulling his feet out of the water and wiggling his toes.

"That doesn't make any sense, you know. Fish don't have concepts like bravery." Tezuka reached out, catching Fuji's ankle and pulling his leg back slightly, so Fuji couldn't do anything but fold his legs and sit on the dock, feet out of the water.

He didn't mind, though. It was easier to watch Tezuka like this. "You mean Finding Nemo lied to me?" Fuji's fake pout was perfect. He'd practiced it in the mirror.

Unsurprisingly, Tezuka was unmoved. He only glanced at Fuji. "Finding Nemo was a cartoon."

"The fish you catch will have gone on an epic journey," Fuji said, ignoring Tezuka, pout having disappeared as if it never was. "It's a brave fish, and it's battled overwhelming odds to make it here so you can catch it. You see, one day it was swimming around, doing fishy things, and it saw you. It said to itself, 'That's the guy who's gonna catch me one day.' So it worked really hard so that one day it could be caught by you."

Tezuka glanced at Fuji again, but didn't say anything. Fuji's smile grew as he continued. "They all called the fish a genius, but he didn't really think he was. He just liked to try new things. But he was never really serious about anything until he saw you. I bet he thought it was strange, he didn't quite know what to do with himself, but he knew right then and there - you were the one."

There was only silence for a long moment before Tezuka spoke. "The first part of that was almost subtle." There was suppressed laughter in his voice, a job well done.

"I am the king of subtlety," Fuji said, pleased with himself. There was enough subtlety in their relationship, sometimes he liked to use the hammer of clarity.

"And also apparently a fish." It was Tezuka's dry humor that appealed to Fuji so much - something rare, that so many people had never and would never see.

He leaned against Tezuka slightly, resting his head on Tezuka's shoulder for a moment and looking out at the river, and at Tezuka's fishing pole, moving just a little. "I'd want to be a puffer fish. Look - I think you've got something."

And they both stopped talking, as Tezuka concentrated on reeling in his fish, and Fuji concentrated on watching Tezuka.

Fuji's fake pout was perfect. He'd practiced it in the mirror. This is my fav line ^_^

I love how Fuji compared himself with the 'fish' and I love it more when Tezuka used this to joke him back :D

I love the whole story, the atmosphere, and two of them make a good companion together. I love how their relationship going - subtle but obvious in their own way ^_~

thank you for sharing this with us!!
