I'm so lazy!
Feb. 5th, 2007 12:13 amI like the other one that I wrote a little more, I think. This seems a little... boring? Also, Tezuka might be a stalker. I don't know. But it's about time! Over a month late, good for me. :P Yes, this is the second half of
aggy's Christmas present. I'm sorry it took so long! I hope this is okay. Also, the title makes no sense. As usual!
Prince of Tennis
Tezuka and Fuji
Prompt was 'cheating on a test' if I remember right
"You could get taken off the team for that." Tezuka was looking at Fuji, stoic as ever but with a disapproving look in his eyes. Fuji wondered if telling Tezuka about the trouble he'd gotten into was a good idea. Probably not, but he kind of enjoyed Tezuka's lectures. He always looked so serious.
"I'd probably get expelled if they knew how often we've done it." Fuji sat on the desk next to Tezuka's, smiling and not sounding regretful at all. "Actually, I'm surprised Kamiyama-sensei noticed this time, I'll have to keep an eye on him."
Tezuka stood, putting away the paperwork he'd been doing - training schedules, ranking match assignments. "So you and Kikumaru can cheat more effectively?"
"Tezuka, you wound me." Fuji didn't look particularly wounded. "We weren't cheating. It's not my fault if Eiji looks at my test, and it's not his fault if he happens to accidentally see an answer or two. Really, we both should have been more careful."
"Is that what you said to your teacher?" Tezuka closed his bag and waited as Fuji slid off the desk, standing.
"More or less. Though Eiji and I were both much more apologetic," Fuji answered, picking up his own schoolbag.
"Fuji, you could both get in serious trouble if you get caught again. Just because you only got a warning and a failing mark is no reason to think it's acceptable. Your teacher went easy on you." Tezuka was smart, and so Fuji knew he was fairly certain his words would have little to no effect, but as Fuji's captain and therefore supposedly in a position of authority, he seemed to feel as if he had to try.
Fuji thought it was cute. "Yes, it's because of my pretty smile. Sensei likes me."
Tezuka was silent for a moment, before continuing as if Fuji had said nothing. "Supporting Kikumaru like this isn't going to help his studies, you realize. He'll only depend on you and never feel like he has to work hard."
"You're the one who likes to work hard, Tezuka," Fuji said. "Eiji's smart, he just doesn't do well on tests. There's too much pressure, and he can never concentrate well enough. He knows the material, he just has trouble when it comes to test. Our education system is too test-focused." He smiled still, though he was serious. "I don't want to see Eiji fail just because he doesn't test well."
Tezuka sighed. It was soft, almost silent, but Fuji noticed. "I know. However, I don't want to see both of you fail because of your desire to help a friend."
"Oh, you just don't want to lose two of your regulars." Fuji smiled, brushing off Tezuka's concern. In the back of his mind, though, he filed it away with all the other little things Tezuka did that proved he really wasn't just a stoic block of stone - things that sometimes Fuji thought he might be the only who noticed.
Walking toward the door of the classroom, Fuji glanced over at Tezuka, smiling. "Come on, I didn't hang around here just to watch you do paperwork. You're walking home with me, right? You can continue the lecture on the way, I'll take notes and everything."
Before he could slide the door open, Tezuka crossed the space between them and reached out, catching Fuji's wrist. "Fuji..."
Fuji turned toward him, meeting Tezuka's eyes. He smiled, a real smile, not the one he wore constantly so people wouldn't know what he was thinking. "Tezuka. I promise I'll be careful. I won't get expelled for this. My future is important to me."
Tezuka nodded slightly and released Fuji. His eyes were, perhaps, just a little softer than usual. Or maybe Fuji was imagining it.
"Though apparently, my future isn't as important to me as it is to you," he couldn't help adding, smile still playing about his lips. "Tezuka, if I didn't know better, I'd think you actually liked me."
Tezuka sent a mildly disapproving glance Fuji's way before he opened the door. "Come on, it's already getting dark." He waited until they were halfway to the school exit before saying anything else. "You're home alone tonight, aren't you? My mother's invited you over for dinner."
Through years of training, Fuji managed to keep from doing more than blinking slightly in surprise. He'd mentioned that once, last week, as a passing comment. He hadn't even thought Tezuka had heard, though he'd been standing close by. They'd been watching a tennis match, Fuji remembered, and he'd been talking to Momoshiro and Eiji.
"Of course, I'd love to come to dinner." Fuji covered up his surprise and kept walking.
Out of the corner of his eye he saw Tezuka nod. He thought he saw a smile, but it could have been his imagination.
Fuji didn't mind getting in trouble, really. It was worth it to help a friend, and it was worth it to see those little hints of concern in Tezuka's manner. And, of course, it was fun.
