It's that time again! Yes. And I've decided to do something of a series, though I'm bad at that kind of thing. Also, AU! Kels enabled me. It makes it easier to do some of the themes, and well... I do love AUs.

Zabuza/Haku
Written for [livejournal.com profile] 30_kisses, theme 2: news; letter

Haku sat quietly, reading the letter the lawyer had given him. It was from his uncle, a man he'd met only a few times in his life, but who was now his only living family. The letter was not long, but when he finished, Haku had to resist the urge to make the lawyer wait longer. Instead he only looked up and nodded. "I see."

The lawyer smiled at him, a perfunctory gesture that both of them knew meant nothing. "You understand. Your uncle doesn't wish to be too closely associated with... recent events. He has appointed a guardian to watch over and protect you until you come of age. Due to the media coverage of the death of your parents, your guardian has been chosen carefully to be certain that you'll be kept safe."

Haku wondered why it was necessary to say these things, since he'd just read the same thing in the letter. In nearly the same words, too. He wondered if the lawyer had been the one who actually wrote the letter.

But it was true. He'd recieved death threats already, despite having been found innocent - he was underage, and it had obviously been self-defense. Still, Haku's father had been a popular actor, and was beloved by many fans. His mother had only been a waitress before they met, and Haku himself had been kept out of the media. Until recently.

Despite the unarguable proof, so many people couldn't believe that his father was a violent man. Haku had lived with it for years. He wondered sometimes if that's why his father had chosen his mother - who would believe a common waitress? She had been beautiful, but quiet and kind. Haku could still remember her warm hugs, the way she'd kiss his cheek before he left for school, the way she smelled.

He could still remember the way she looked when Haku walked in on his father's anger. He'd gone too far already, Haku had always been very intelligent and he could see it, the red of her blood on the carpet. Believing it was more difficult. He might even have pretended not to see it, might have continued on as his father's son and quietly endured, but that time he couldn't.

It had been self-defense. Haku knew very well that his father would have killed him. He regretted the concept, regretted the thought of murder, the loss of a precious life. He had always been a kind boy, everyone knew that.

He didn't regret what he'd done. Some things were necessary. But he was very intelligent, and never breathed a word to anyone. When he cried, they assumed it was for his own guilt and his loss. He wouldn't tell them it was only for his kind mother, the one who had truly loved him.

"You've been enrolled in private school, the people there know how to handle these kinds of situations. You'll be in the public eye for awhile longer, but people will forget."

Haku realized the lawyer was still talking, and politely focused on him again. "I understand, sir. Thank you for all your help." The thanks was unnecessary, since there was a large sum of money involved already.

"All you have to do is behave yourself, your uncle will pay for your tuition, housing, and any other expenses. When you come of age, there's a trust fund waiting for you." The lawyer rifled through his papers. "I think that's about it. Do you have any questions?"

"No, sir." Haku's voice was soft.

"Then I'll leave you now. You have my number, contact me if you want anything passed on to your uncle or if you have any problems." He stood, putting the various papers back into his briefcase before he walked to the door and opened it, motioning someone inside. "This is your guardian."

Haku stood as well. The man who came in looked more like a thug than a guardian, but Haku hadn't expected much. He knew this was mostly a formality, and he would be taking care of himself. It was all right. He was good at that. But this man - there was something about him, a look in his eye. It was gone in a moment, though, and Haku nodded in greeting. "Hello."

The man stepped forward. He looked somewhat uncomfortable in the nice clothes he was wearing, only strengthening the impression that he was a common thug, but though his posture made it clear he wasn't used to this, his expression was no less than intimidating. "I'm called Zabuza."

Intimidating, but Haku wasn't frightened. He smiled slightly, something he could still do even through everything that had happened. "Thank you for your hard week. I'm pleased to meet you. I am Haku."
