Christmas fic!
Jan. 20th, 2007 07:50 pmBelated Christmas ficlet for
vinnydapoo. Sorry for the lateness! Also sorry for the shortness, and the fact that I couldn't find a bunch of my issues. But this is set shortly after Xavin and Karolina leave Earth, I think. I hope you enjoy!
Runaways
Xavin/Karolina
The stars were beautiful.
Karolina had discovered a fondness within herself for this. In the blackness of space, she felt close to everything and yet so small. Often while they traveled she would find herself gazing out the window of Xavin's spacecraft, looking at stars that few human eyes had ever or would ever see.
Though she knew she wasn't human, Karolina still felt somewhere inside of her that she was. She'd always felt a little different in some ways, outside of what was normal, but finding out that she was more different than she'd ever thought had paradoxically brought her closer to humanity as a whole. Out here in the blackness of space, it all came back to her, the difference between the world she was raised in and the world she apparently belonged to.
That was what she thought of when she looked at the stars.
"My love," Xavin spoke from behind her. Karolina paused for a moment before she turned. She was never sure what she'd see. Would it be the green-skinned alien boy, the dark-skinned human, or the human girl that she could easily admit was her favorite?
She relaxed ever so slightly when she saw Xavin's soft features and full lips. Karolina knew that it was somehow wrong to prefer one form so much over the others, but she couldn't help it. After finally admitting the truth to herself and to her friends, how could she go back to pretending to like boys?
"Xavin." Karolina smiled, a little nervously. She still wasn't entirely comfortable with the alien, but she knew it would take time. She always wondered how Xavin did it so easily, with no hesitation. Truthfully, it made Karolina feel warm to hear the words 'my love' from those lips.
"Do you enjoy watching the stars?" Xavin approached, sitting next to Karolina on the soft bench near the window. There wasn't much space between them, and Karolina was torn with the desire to move - whether closer or further away, she wasn't sure. She stayed where she was.
"Yes. They're beautiful." Karolina's eyes strayed to the window again, the spots of light and deep darkness between them.
"Shall I show you something?" Xavin smiled at Karolina, and leaned in close. Karolina didn't move, but could feel herself flushing a little. Xavin smelled like something completely alien, even in this human form. It wasn't a bad smell, only very different - but Karolina thought she might like it.
Next to her, Xavin pointed at one of the stars. "Orbiting that one is a small planet with the most beautiful plant intelligences. They look something like your Earth dahlias."
"Really?" Karolina realized she knew very little about anything beyond Earth, not even her own people - especially not other aliens. "Are they friendly?"
"Friendly enough," Xavin said, smiling slightly. "They haven't developed spaceflight, so they are little threat, and their only real weapon is a cloud of poison spores. However, they'll only attack if threatened. And over there," Xavin indicated another star, "there's a gas planet that has gentle winds - gentler than most, anyway. If you're careful and you have the right equipment, you can ride on the winds. It's an amazing experience."
Karolina could only imagine. "I'd like to go one day." She met Xavin's eyes, smiling. "It sounds incredible." Impossible, more like. But nothing was impossible anymore, and she had the whole universe before her. She was realizing now that Xavin could show it to her.
"I'll take you one day." Xavin leaned in, ever so slightly, and Karolina couldn't look away from those deep eyes. Bit by bit, she was growing closer to this strange being. She felt their lips touch, and it felt right.
