Naruto
Zabuza/Haku
Written for
30_kisses, theme #23: candy
Zabuza didn't really know why he'd picked it up, and he didn't want to think about it too deeply. If he'd had to pay for it, he wouldn't have. They had little enough money as it was. But since it was just sitting there, neatly wrapped and conveniently unbloodied, Zabuza took it.
After they were away from the scene (a job well done, unknowing ninja slaughtered like sheep), Zabuza glanced at the brightly-wrapped piece of candy again. Something a father had bought to give to his child. It would never reach them now.
Zabuza didn't care. He was no father, and Haku was not his child. But sometimes Haku was a child, enjoying soft things and sweet things, as if there was no blood on his hands. It was easy to know what would please him, though those things were foreign to Zabuza.
It was a reward, Zabuza thought. It would have been a waste to leave it, and since he'd taken it, he may as well put it to use. And he wouldn't eat it himself. Zabuza hated sweet things.
That night, as they settled down to sleep, he left the candy out. He wouldn't give it to Haku, but he knew that Haku would take it. He was right. The boy picked it up, only looking mildly surprised, and unwrapped it.
After one taste, Haku smiled at him like a blessing, like a soft kiss. Zabuza looked away.
