asaelWell, I feel like crap tonight, so I figure I might as well take advantage of it and write. And I managed to finish a fic for ![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-community.gif)
30_kisses. Good times. I actually feel better now, maybe I should write more. And man, have I ever actually written Naruto fic before? Like, non-RP stuff?

Theme #6: the space between dream and reality
Haku rarely remembers his dreams. When he does, they're misty, gray, full of fog and shadows. He thinks he prefers it that way. It's not fair, really, that someone like him should sleep soundly, unmoved by the things he's done. But it's far more efficient this way. If he woke up screaming or crying every night, would Zabuza still find him useful?
One day Haku wakes up, the still-cool light of a bright morning waking him earlier than he needs to be awake. The sunlight slants through the leaves above him, and he gazes at it, eyes unfocused, as he tries to cast off the clinging cobwebs of sleep. Normally, Haku can leap from fast asleep to wide awake- an invaluable skill for a ninja- but today, he doesn't need to. Later, he and Zabuza will attend to their work for the day, have blood on their hands again, but for now Haku doesn't need to do anything at all.
He thinks that he dreamed, but he can't remember anything more than a warm, safe feeling, an unformed sense of longing, arms around him, lips pressing lightly against his brow. He holds onto the remnants of the dream, and turns his head to look at his partner.
Zabuza is a few feet away, presumably asleep, but it was always difficult to tell with him. Someone who lives their life on the edge develops keen senses, Haku knows that well, and Zabuza may well have woken the instant Haku moved, no matter how small it was.
Haku gazes at the planes of Zabuza's face, waking fully, letting his dream slip away. It was, after all, only a dream. Nothing to dwell on.
